How to Compress JPEG Files without Losing Quality

According to WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organization), Intellectual Property refers to the creation and labor of the mind, including its fruition. It could be inventions, artistic and literary works, symbols, names, images and designs used in commerce. So, when someone came up with an epic or novel artistic creations, it can be protected in various ways and in many levels. This can be Patents, Trademarks or Copyright. But what are they exactly and how are they any different?

In the digital age, images play a pivotal role in communication and content creation. However, large image files can quickly consume storage space and hinder website performance. JPEG, a commonly used image format, offers a balance between image quality and file size. However, compressing JPEG files often results in a noticeable loss of image quality.

In this tutorial, we’ll explore effective methods for compressing JPEG files while preserving their original quality. 1. MS Paint


This is basically the most classical way of decreasing JPEG file size. During the Floppy Disks or Diskette type storages that can only hold 1.4MB of data, compressing JPEG file using MS Paint is a go-to household procedure.

That’s how quick and handy this compression procedure is.

Notice a little decrease in image size without compromising much of the image quality as well. This may not be that much. But if the form requires you to decrease a little bit of size before you can upload, this process will mean a lot.

2. Save as WEBP File Format


WEBP file format stands for “WebPy” or loosely mean Web Photos. Though WEBP is not a directly JPEG format when saved, it serves a lot of web optimization mileage if you need your image to be uploaded to the web or to a website. No worries, since most known modern browsers open and read WEBP images efficiently. For this tutorial, we will use Photoshop, but you can definitely use other conversion tools.

WebP Setting appears. Leave settings as is – Hit OK.

Now, notice the significant loss in file size but not in the image quality. You can check out the image using a web browser of your choice. Just drag and drop.

Note: If you don’t have or cannot find WebP file extension in your Photoshop, it’s possible that you don’t have the plugin installed. This is true with older versions of Photoshop. Get the Plugin Here.

3. Save for Web


Another classical technique is Photoshop’s “Save For Web” feature. This is a legacy feature of Adobe Photoshop, which means it is an old and rested feature but still pretty much working. This is not commonly used today, but this feature has tremendous benefits in reducing the file size of JPEG file without compromising quality.

Save for Web Settings appears.

Leave the rest of the settings as is. Then hit Save…

Here again, notice the significant decrease in image file size, but the image quality holds still.
